Video of finale walk:
Choi was initially drawn to the fact that abstract art makes no attempt to depict an accurate representation of a visual reality but uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect.
In this he saw parallels with how he approaches design. Eudon was particularly drawn to the work of two female painters - Saloua Raouda Choucair and Helen Frankenthaler. While both firmly abstract artists Saloua and Helen have widely differing styles with Saloua favouring sharp and graphic lines and strong colours and Helen’s work characterised by fluid shapes with muted and relaxed brushwork.
It is this juxtaposition of the hard and the soft, the muted and the vivid that forms the core point of reference for the AW16 collection.
This is discernable in Choi’s focus on draping mixed with tailored structure, abstract seams and hemlines and contrasting panels of colour.
The AW16 collection is an imagined dialogue between Saloua and Helen and the artistic styles they championed.
The show is called Sunwise Turn. In the Celtic tradition a Sunwise Turn was considered the “prosperous course” - turning from east to west in the direction of the sun, something that resonated with Choi.
