i-am-chen AW19 at London Fashion Week

Inspired by the american abstract painter Agnes Martin, this season Chen has focused on classic elements such as grid, line and point.

The collection shares Martin's geometric repetition

her minimalist touch through the making of the garments in one piece

and also her abstract expression with the use of an explosion of vivid colour.

i-am-chen SS19 at Fashion Scout during London Fashion Week

This Hong Kong based fashion knitwear brand founded by ZHI Chen is the winner of the SS19 coveted Merit Award

Watching the Vietnamese film ‘The Scent of Green Papaya’ Chen was inspired by how the main character Mui finds beauty in the small details of her surroundings: water droplets on a leaf and speckled sunlight through the undergrowth.

The green foliage and nourishing rain are the spirit of Chen’s SS19 collection.

She introduces the finest silk knit using an 18 gauge knitting machine with Japanese superfine silk yarn. Knitted together with Italian translucent yarn the result creates pieces shimmering like speckled sunlight.

The collection is colourful and youthful bringing a fun element to knitwear.

Ones To Watch: i-am-chen AW18 at London Fashion Week

Selected from a long list of emerging fashion designers, Chen Zhi's knitwear label i-am-chen collection was chosen to feature in Fashion Scout's Ones to Watch show.

The collection is fun and lighthearted  with a sense of childish playfulness.

By playing with different knitting machines and threads, Chen creates unique garments in eye catching shapes and colour combinations.

Different textures are intricately knitted together to form one seamless garment.

Thanks to Chen's attention to detail, both outside and inside of the knitted garment are equally neat as can be seen on the coat's lapel.
