PORTS 1961 Womenswear Pre Spring 2018

Travel - literally, and metaphorically - is the inspiration for the pre-spring Ports 1961 collection.

 1961 - the year Ports was founded - marked the start of the true jet-set, of travel as a leisure pass-time, a pleasure rather than an arduous necessity.

 Today, Ports 1961 Creative Director Nataša Čagalj and her design team draw influence from the idea of wanderlust, of travel as a journey not only between different locations, but different experiences, fresh inspirations, and new horizons.

The enjoyment of travel is translated to an enjoyment in dressing.

 Rather than a specific destination, there’s a sense of exploration, of a journey in progress - packing and unpacking, a dynamic and spontaneous mix of clothing.

 Inspired by far-flung cultures, styles are juxtaposed and fused in an arresting bricolage.
Fashion without borders.

 Stretch British-style tweeds combine with Madras checks and Hispanic stripes, fair isle knits and matelot stripes, reflect an aesthetic restlessness.

Shapes are straightforward, graphic and utilitarian - easy trench coats, wide trousers, - They allow the pattern to speak.

 Colours reflect rich Caribbean shades, but sunbleached to gentle pastel hues of powder pink, cornflower and lettuce.

 Shoes are crissed with woven raffia and set atop Cuban heels, ready for another journey.

 The thread running through everything is humour.

 An unpredictability in the blending of styles and cultures, a wit in their new expression in an expansive vacation wardrobe.

Ports 1961 AW17 Womens Collection

Titled:Coming home, The A/W 17, Ports 1961 collection marks a homecoming for Creative Director Nataša Čagalj and her design team, who all studied in London at Central Saint Martins.

 The city is also the location of their studio, where this collection was conceived and developed.

Aptly, home and the house - places of familiarity and comfort - inform the collection.

 Home is interpreted as a place of safety, which allows one to be comfortable enough to experiment, relax and express personality.

 Objects, colours and textures from the home inspire the pieces, which are put together with the signature humour and refinement that underlies Ports 1961.

 Just as our possessions and the objects we choose to live with always reflect the self, these elements suggest and define the taste and style of the Ports 1961 woman.

This season, she is prepared, protected and tough.

An off duty, relaxed scene is evoked in the Ports 1961 Pre Fall 17 collection, drawing on domestic objects and the everyday as its inspiration.

 The collection melds together the comfort of familiarity in carefree arcadian elements with the modernity of the brand's signature multi-function pieces.

 Felted winter blankets are reworked as outerwear coats..

 Commonplace still life photographs of seasonal flowers in vases brought from home, appear on knits and on crisp poplin shirts.

 A fresh perspective can be seen on the recurring theme of stripes,

 which in turn become familiar checks as they make their way through the collection.

 Inviting homespun knitwear, soft textures of brushed wool and double faced cashmere combine with warm hues of currant, caramel and turmeric to evoke a sense of gentle luxury.

Experimentation is at the heart of the Pre-spring 17 collection, which draws inspiration from the creative process itself.

Versatile, adaptive pieces form looks that can cross seasons, in a colour palette that moves from ice cream pastel tones to bold, energetic stripes, prints and textured neutrals.

 Fabric itself is taken as a starting point, with particular attention paid to the fabric mills and factories of Italy that Ports 1961 works with.

With a nod to the heritage of the house, the label’s Made in Italy and Work in Progress insignia are reworked to become central components of individual garments.

 Woven jacquards, cottons and silk fil coupé offer an evolved take on traditional shirting and outerwear. Sporty stripes pay heed to a buoyant, spirited mood.

 Glossy coated cotton in a rich brown features on a cocoon coat.

Everywhere there is a sense of challenging the norm with lighthearted grace, subverting our expectations of what femininity and elegance can look like.
 Playful elements such as patchwork motifs, collaged pieces and cut-outs advance the inherent adaptability of the brand’s classic shapes.

A shrunken raincoat features cut-outs which allows it to be worn as a cape over the shoulders.

The tape traditionally used in the construction of raincoats is repurposed into a medium for decoration, as scribbled lips appear joyfully on bonded cotton coats and Breton striped sweaters
