Hayfever Essentials‏

Summer is arriving and temperatures are soaring. While many will be enjoying the warm, dry weather, others will be dreading the start of the hay fever season.

Stop pollen in its tracks - Care+ Allergy Defence
This natural, antihistamine and steroid-free powder nasal spray works by reacting with the moisture within the nose, creating an invisible thin, protective gel barrier.
It prevents allergens from coming into direct contact with the nasal membrane and encouraging the production of histamine. It helps reduce the symptoms of birch pollen and grass pollen.
Price £5.99 (200 sprays), Morrison’s and Holland & Barrett

Stop that itchy throat – Ultra Chloraseptic

One of the most forgotten, yet painful, hay fever symptoms is the sore throat
Ultra Chloraseptic® Anaesthetic Throat Sprays help ease the pain of a sore throat by going directly to the site of the pain for fast, effective and targeted relief. The product contains the active ingredient Benzocaine which is a local anaesthetic used to numb the pain.
Ultra Chloraseptic costs £5.75, with each bottle containing more than 100 sprays (30 adult doses) and is available from Boots.

Dry your eyes – Murine Hay fever Relief Eye Drops

To stop itchy, red and watery eyes in their tracks, try prescription strength Murine Hay fever Relief Eye Drops with Sodium Cromoglicate which reduces the body’s response to hay fever by stopping the production of histamines and in turn prevents the symptoms, such as itchy, red and watery eyes, from developing.
Murine Hay fever Relief Eye Drops provides a straight forward, rapid and effective means of reducing eye discomfort caused by hay fever symptoms.
Sodium cromoglicate helps reduce the body’s response to the hay fever allergy and provide relief from itching and reduce redness.
Tip: Most eye drops for hay fever symptoms are not suitable for use with contact lenses. Use the drops first and then put your contacts in 15 minutes later.

The natural solution – Pycnogenol
Pycnogenol®, an antioxidant pine bark extract helps improves the symptoms of hay fever caused by birch pollen.
Pycnogenol® naturally relieves eye and nasal symptoms of hay-fever patients owing to lower pollen-specific antibodies, particularly for ocular and nasal distress.
Price  £17.99 for 30  capsules  from Holland and Barrett Direct link

The natural solution – Nature’s Best Quercitin
Nature’s Best Quercetin is the preventative approach for hayfever sufferers to avoid allergic symptoms. “Quercetin inhibits the release of histamine, making it nature’s anti-histamine,” explains Nutritionist Dr Sam Christie. “Quercetin is a member of the flavonoid family of plant pigments and is found in relatively generous amounts in foods such as onions, apples and black tea. Flavonoids are hugely important to the health of our bodies as they neutralise free radicals so they become less reactive compounds. These antioxidant properties inhibit the production and release of histamines.”
 Nature’s Best Quercetin is £12.95 for 60 tablets (500mg).

Super skin saviours

Antioxidants are crucial to our health, beauty and wellbeing. They help our body put up its best defence against free radicals – cells which are damaged by environmental factors and unhealthy lifestyle choices - which leave our bodies susceptible to early signs of aging.

See below how antioxidants can help combat common skin health and beauty complaints:

 Fight oxidative stress triggered aging
Oxidative stress plays a central role in initiating and driving skin aging at the cellular level, by breaking down protein (collagen), altering cellular renewal cycles and damaging DNA. Luckily, our bodies cleverly defend themselves from oxidative stress by producing an armoury of antioxidants which neutralise free radicals preventing our cells from harm
Each person’s genetic make-up determines how the body battles free radical damage, but with things like poor diet, sun exposure, smoking and pollution common place in modern life it can be no mean feat for even the strongest natural defence system.
To give your body the best fighting chance to combat oxidative stress, ensure your diet is filled with antioxidant rich foods such as carrots, citrus fruits and tomatoes.
Also include a multi-vitamin such as Centrum Women, which contains Vitamins E, C, Copper and Zinc, all of which contribute to the protection of cell constituents from oxidative damage Centrum Women Daily Multivitamins £7.89 for 30 tablets and £12.99 for 60 tablets,

Acne Be Gone
Acne is a common skin condition which affects most people at some point or another. It is predominantly caused by hormonal changes as well as environmental irritants such a pollution and humidity.
Acne can be destructive both physically and emotionally and the solutions can seem like a mine field, however finding a solution would be as simple as one, two, algae. Japanese algae, such as chlorella, Spirulina and kelp, may seem an odd skin healing ingredient but actually they are less strange than you might imagine. The University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture, found the fatty acids present in these plants could prevent the growth of Propionibacterium acnes - a bacterium which causes acne. Sun Chlorella A is a natural single celled green algae supplement, which also contains highly concentrated antioxidants, such as beta-carotene. Supermodel Miranda Kerr claims “To keep my skin in check I always eat lots of greens and take Chlorella supplements and drink lots of water” Sun Chlorella is priced £21.95 for 300 tablets (a 20-30 day supply) available from http://www.bodykind.com/

Plump Up skin
Over time, the sun's ultraviolet rays damage certain fibres in the skin called elastin. The breakdown of elastin causes the skin to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to bounce back after stretching As we age our skin may also become rougher, thinner and more prone to bruising.

In a UK first, a clinical study showed a daily tablet could significantly improve skin firmness and reduce wrinkle depth while providing a natural sun protection factor (SPF) of 10 in 12 weeks and SPF of 15 in 24 weeks.
Colladeen Visage,is a potent mix of natural plant extracts high in lutein and anthocyanidins which improve the appearance of the skin by supporting the structure from within.
Colladeen has demonstrable clinically proven benefits including reduction in wrinkles, firmer skin, shrinking spider veins and providing an internal SPF, which has the long term benefit of preventing further photo-aging. Colladeen Visage is priced at £18.95 for 60 tablets from

Holland & Barrett 2015 Press/Bloggers Event

Holland & Barrett press/bloggers event was a wonderland of health and beauty products.

To discover the world of Holland & Barrett, entry was through the large door for Healthy Beauty and the small door , new health and foods for 2015. Feeling like Alice in Wonderland I chose the small door - More fool me as they both lead to the same room!

In the beauty section was a human sized Burt's Bees hive (or had I shrunk?)

Dr Organic has increased their Snail Gel collection to include eye serum, facial serum, hand & nail elixir and moisture mask. One of the fastest trends this year was their face cream. Not so sluggish now hey?

Other popular anti ageing must haves are the Sin Doctors YouthCell and the Pure Marula Facial Oil.
YouthCell targets oily uneven skin tones as well as fine lines and wrinkles. It is packed with over 16 beautifying skin nutrients for shine free matte skin.
Marula Facial Oil from East Africa contains even higher levels of antioxidants then Argan and Grapeseed oils. Rich in Omega 9 fatty oils which deeply rejuvenates the skin and offers long lasting hydration. Is PH balanced and non comedogenic i.e. it doesn't clog the pores and it absorbs quickly.

The Beauty Kitchen Create Your Own Bath Bombs and Create Your own Lip Balms will make fun Xmas presents.

Moving on to the food section, the very pink Mad Hatter's dining table included an array of healthy foods with 'eat me' and 'drink me' tags - so it would have been rude not to try.

The Beauty Sweeties are the first confectionery aimed at the beauty conscious consumer. Beauty Sweeties contain 81 percent concentrated fruit and three natural skin boosting ingredients: Coenzyme Q10, Aloe Vera and Biotin. Flavours are honeydew melon, cranberry and pink grapefruit.

At the exit was funfair fortune teller Zoltar to predict your beauty future. Mine? Well if I keep using the Holland Barrett products I think it will be clear and luminous.
