Belstaff and Liv Tyler Celebrate the Launch of SS17 at London Fashion Week

Liv Tyler’s second capsule for Belstaff captures the heady vibe of the English countryside at the end of the 1960s / start of the 70s and the rock’n’roll characters that were drawn to it at the time.

 Shapes and silhouettes reference the free-spirited women who were such an important part of that scene, such as Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull and Patti Boyd. Liv explains “I wanted to tap into the spirit of those women at that time, combining it with my love of Belstaff’s military archive pieces, yet done in my way.” The result is a capsule that is at once strong, yet feminine and playful.

 The palette reflects the summer countryside - taking more than a cue from Liv’s break-out film Stealing Beauty directed by Bernardo Bertolucci - rich with khaki, sand and washed-out denim hues, while a floral motif has been presented on a black background (in a silk jumpsuit, pussy-bow blouse and a bomber jacket) for an edgier aesthetic.

 A soft tactility is at the heart of the collection, from the Alconbury, a cropped fitted leather biker jacket with epaulettes (inspired by an early 70s racing blouson from Belstaff’s archive) to a beautiful sage-green suede suit made up of an A-line popper-fronted skirt and sartorial jacket.

 The military influence is visible in a four-pocket trench coat in olive and sand, and a cotton olive cape, both of which are water-repellent.

Military buttons are also a feature of a striped knit and a cropped regalia jacket. These structured pieces are juxtaposed with more relaxed shapes such as a denim dress with four pockets referencing Belstaff’s heritage outerwear and matching wide-leg cropped jeans. The Amira bag from the Belstaff & Liv AW16 capsule has proved so popular it’s been reproposed in a new material (suede) and other colours (cognac in the large size and military green in the baby version).

A fresh yet bold polka-dot patterned silk top and wide trousers - a look whose inspiration Liv took from Katherine Hepburn.

  The flat Hanlon sandal in the same materials as the bags with studding completes the look.

THE BELSTAFF & LIV TYLER AW16 COLLECTION

This is the first capsule that the American actress has worked on with modern British heritage brand Belstaff, to which she is Ambassador and Creative Contributor.

 “I’d always wanted to create a few timeless classics. Things I have in my closet but wished I designed myself,” says Liv Tyler. “I sought to express strength through the outerwear and leather pieces alongside a more feminine sensual side through the softer materials like silk, and via the more fitted silhouettes of my styles. It’s a celebration of the feminine and masculine rolled into one.”

 A fine leather jacket with a removable collar and a quilted interior is contrasted with blush pussy-bow blouses and fitted under-the-knee riding boots.

A new, more fitted take on the Milford (the coat Belstaff originally created for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock) has been created in three fabrications, while two nylon parkas come with removable shearling gilets.

New technical fabrications for Belstaff include a protective coated treatment and water-repellent cotton and a lightweight nylon.
 “I have a preference for clothes that are practical and functional but also very luxurious and elegant. I like being able to throw a look together quickly and feel and look my best. I know what works for me and my body, and I try to stick to that” adds Tyler.

A good part of the collection is made up of outerwear in a nod to Belstaff’s foundations as a brand and to Liv’s own reliance on a great coat to pull a look together whilst adding “a touch of masculinity”. “When I think of Belstaff, I think of great coats that last a really long time and get better and better with age,” adds Liv, who despite the time she spent in the company archive, ended up focusing on the future: “I wanted to create something fresh that every woman would want to add to her closet and keep for many years to come” she concludes.

 The capsule was shot on up and coming model Greta Varlese in Brooklyn’s Red Hook Docks, with Tyler art directing.

LIV TYLER & BELSTAFF CELEBRATE PREMIERE OF THEIR FILM 'FALLING UP'

Liv Tyler hosted a cocktail party to celebrate the launch of Belstaff’stemporary pop-up store in New York’s Soho with an exclusive preview of her new campaign film for the brand to attending guests.

'Falling Up’, a short campaign film, executively produced by and starring herself, and directed by Niall O’Brien. In the film, Tyler retraces the footsteps of pioneering 1920’s aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Earhart, one of the first women Belstaff dressed, broke free from the expectations of her time by trusting her instinct and following her heart. Tyler is the perfect fit for a character that cuts her own path, on her own terms. Liv Tyler said: “We’d been thinking of ways to tell the story of who the Belstaff woman really is - free-spirited, independent, brave. Amelia was the perfect inspiration: besides wearing Belstaff back then, she was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic by herself and attempted to fly around the world. She was such a strong, powerful, intelligent, yet feminine, woman. It was an honour to play a woman based on such an incredible inspiring icon.

Throughout the evening guests enjoyed music by Fabrizio Moretti (wearing Belstaff) whilst sipping champagne and watching the film, which was projected within the space.
